28 May 2018: Senior journalists, Amar Devulapalli and Sabina Inderjit are elected unanimously as President and Secretary-General respectively of Indian Journalists Union (IJU), the premier and most representative organisation of the working journalists in the country.
According to an announcement made by Prem Nath Bhargava, the Central Returning Officer (CRO) for the IJU Elections-2018 in Delhi, they were elected as President and Secretary-General unanimously, as they were only candidates left in the field after the deadline for withdrawals was over at 3 pm on Monday. They are expected to assume their posts in the Plenary Session of the Union to be held shortly.
Amar Devulapalli based in Hyderabad is a senior journalist with four decades of service in journalism. He is now the Consulting Editor of Saakshi daily. He also anchors a popular news hour program ‘Fourth Estate’ in Saakshi TV for five days a week. Starting his career as journalist in Eenadu in late 70s, he worked in Andhra Bhoomi, Udayam, Andhra Prabha. He was the founder editor of Prajatantra Weekly. He served as Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Press Academy for two terms.
He is very active in journalists professional and trade union movement for the last over forty years. He was elected President of Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) for two terms and General Secretary for one term. Currently he is the Secretary-General of Indian Journalists Union (IJU).
Sabina Inderjit is a senior journalist based in Delhi and working as Associate Editor of the Indian News and Features Agency (INFA), founded by her grandfather and veteran editor Durga Das and nurtured by her father Inderjit, a veteran journalist and parliamentarian. Earlier she worked as Special correspondent in Times of India. She served as member of the Press Council of India for two terms and was also member of the Central Press Accreditation Committee of the Press Information Bureau.
She is very active in journalists’ professional and trade union movement nationally and internationally for the last two and half decades. Currently she is the Vice-President of International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and earlier elected member of the Executive Committee of the Brussels based international body of journalists for four consecutive terms. She is presently Vice-President of IJU and earlier elected Treasurer of the IJU. She held the post of Vice-President in Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ).
Outgoing President S N Sinha, former Secretary-General K Sreenivas Reddy, a senior leader K Amarnath congratulated Amar and Sabina on their election as President and Secretary-General of the IJU and hoped that the IJU would continue to fight for the freedom of press and for improving the living and working conditions of the working journalists in the country under their stewardship.
