Guwahati, 1 January 2021: The Journalists Union of Assam (JUA), a premier registered body of journalists of the State, today submitted a memorandum to the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal urging him to give representation of the union in the State accreditation committee as per guidelines of the Press Council of India.
The JUA drew attention of the CM to the unfortunate fact that though the union had its representation on the State Accreditation Committee for the past 25 years, last time it was denied the same and therefore he ensure that its representative is on the committee.
While appreciating that the government had allotted land to the Guwahati Press Club, the JUA President Geetartha Pathak and Secretary Samim Sultana Ahmed urged Mr Sonowal to allot a separate plot of land to the union to help in function as a trade union body. Besides, the JUA requested that a press lounge be set up at the FIPR complex with all facilities including high speed internet.
The Union also requested the CM to issue an order to municipal authorities to exempt journalists from parking taxes and as well as ask his office to take up the issue of parking fees in Guwahati airport and railway stations with the appropriate authorities so that journalists are exempted from it at these places. The CM assured the JUA delegation that he will sympathetically look into its demands.
