27 March 2024: The Indian Journalists Union condemns the assault by Delhi police on photojournalists who were covering the protests by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers against arrest of Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal. The union demands that the police should apologise as well as action be taken against the erring officers.

According to reports, photos and videos which went viral on social media, policemen were seen roughing up media personnel and worse a senior police officer had even grabbed a photo journalist, Arun Thakur of India Today group by his throat and threatened him while another photo journalist from Hindustan, Salman Ali had fractured his elbow in the chaos.

In a statement, IJU President and former member of Press Council of India Geetartha Pathak and IJU Secretary General and Vice President of International Federation of Journalists Sabina Inderjit said the while the police seek to deny the assault, the photos and videos show the reality. The photojournalists were carrying out their duty and interfering and stopping them to their job was throttling press freedom. Safety of journalists is essential in any civilised society and the Union Home Ministry must take action against erring personnel.
