12 January 2019: Welcoming the conviction of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh for the murder of Sirsa-based journalist Ram Chander Chattarpati, the Indian Journalists Union, the largest and most representative organisation of journalists in the country, said his family and the journalist fraternity have finally got justice.
20 December 2018: The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) strongly protested against the jailing of journalist Kishorechandra Wangkhem for one year under the National Security Act (NSA) on Tuesday in Manipur. He was accused of posting objectionable and defamatory comments in social media against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, the Chief Minister of Manipur and the Prime Minister.
3 December 2018: The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) has strongly condemned the Manipur government for grossly misusing the draconian National Security Act (NSA) to silence criticism. Making a note of the detention of a ‘journalist’ Kishorechandra Wangkhem, under the Act in Imphal on 27 November for expressing his views against the leaders of ruling party at the Centre and the State in a Facebook post, the IJU said the detention violated the freedom of expression guaranteed under the Constitution and worse it was a blatant use of misuse of the NSA by the authorities.
31 October 2018: The Indian Journalists Union strongly condemned the killing of two journalists, one in Chhattisgarh and another in Jharkhand on Tuesday. The Doordarshan cameraman Achyutanand Sahu was killed in the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh in an ambush by Maoists when he was accompanying a police party on poll duty. Chandan Tiwari, correspondent of Hindi daily ‘Aaj’ in Chatra district, Jharkhand, was killed by unknown assailants.
1 October 2018: The Indian Journalists Union, the largest and most representative organisation of working journalists in the country, strongly condemned the arbitrary and illegal retrenchment of 297 employees of Press Trust of India (PTI), across the country on Saturday.
3 September 2018: The Indian Journalists Union, the largest and most representative organisation of working journalists in the country, strongly condemns the harassment and week-long police custody of Assistant Editor Aasif Sultan, of Kashmir monthly magazine “Kashmir Narrator,” since Saturday last. Worse, the mischievous action is based on fabricated charges as made out by the police i.e. his alleged “involvement in militancy-related incidents” in the Valley.
16 July 2018: The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) took strong exception to the summoning of Auqib Javeed, a reporter of Kashmir Observer newspaper based in Srinagar by the National Investigative Agency (NIA) on Saturday and Sunday to question on his professional and personal activities.
28 May 2018: Senior journalists, Amar Devulapalli and Sabina Inderjit are elected unanimously as President and Secretary-General respectively of Indian Journalists Union (IJU), the premier and most representative organisation of the working journalists in the country.
17 April 2018: The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) strongly condemned the First Information Report (FIR) against Swathi Vadlamudi of The Hindu and Shabbir Ahmed of Times Now by the Hyderabad Police on complaint by the Hindu Sanghatan. Swathi posted a cartoon in her Face Book page showing Lord Rama and Sita discussing the Kathua and Unnao incidents while Ahmed shared the same on his Twitter. The police filed an FIR against both of them on complaint by the Hindu Sanghatan, an outfit affiliated to the Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) alleging that the cartoon offended the feelings of a religious community.
13 April 2018: The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) strongly condemned the attack on two journalists-one photojournalist working with Times of India and a TV reporter of ETV Bharat-by the ruling Trinamool Congress workers on 9 April at Alipore in 24 Paraganas District in West Bengal.
10 April 2018: Eight organisations representing editors, working journalists and owners of the media in the country urged upon the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately intervene to defer the meeting of the truncated Press Council of India on 11 April as it consisted of eight members- five MPs and three official nominees- out of 28 members, leaving out representatives of the print media organisations, whose names were yet to be notified. They also requested him to instruct the I&B Ministry to include representatives of journalists unions/associations in Central Press Accreditation Committee (CPAC), which were kept out, in clear violation of the guidelines.
