New Delhi, 24 May 2022: The Indian Journalists Union is shocked at the brutal murder of Subhash Kumar Mahto, a local reporter in Begusaria district, Bihar, allegedly by liquor and sand mafia on May 20. The IJU condemns the dastardly act and demands that the State government brings the culprits to book.

New Delhi, May 11, 2022: Indian Journalists Union (IJU) welcomes the decision of the Supreme Court of India to keep application of sedition law in abeyance. Journalists Union of Assam an affiliate of IJU along with others challenged section 124(A) of the Indian Penal Code as the law is being extensively used against independent media by the authorities. A special bench comprising Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli held that all pending cases, appeals and proceedings with respect to charges framed under Section 124A should be kept in abeyance.

New Delhi, 8 March, 2022: On International Women’s Day, the Indian Journalists Union joins the International Federation of Journalists to demand urgent action to tackle the widespread online abuse and harassment faced by women journalists around the world. The call comes following  results of two global surveys which exposed a serious lack of action among media companies.

New Delhi, 21 February 2022: The Indian Journalists Union joins its affiliate the Odisha Journalists Union in condemning the attack on four journalists and kidnapping of another by  miscreants who tried to capture a polling booth in the ongoing Panchayat elections at Bhamdevpurarea at Binjharour area of Jaipur district on Sunday last. The Unions demanded that the administration arrest the culprits immediately as the attack was not just on journalists but an attack on press freedom and democracy.

New Delhi, 17 January 2022: The Indian Journalists Union condemns the J&K Registrar of Society for putting in abeyance the Kashmir Press Club’s registration and the ‘forcible takeover’ of the Club by a group of journalists, aided by the J&K administration and the police. The KPC, said the Union, has been vocal on media issues, sustained harassment and intimidation of journalists in the Valley and the twin actions smack of vendetta and brazen attempt to silence dissenting voices. The Union demands immediate restoration of the Club’s registration as a society and that elections be held at the earliest.

New Delhi, 5 December 2021: The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) expresses grave concern over editor of a local news portal Barak Bulletin, Anirban Roy Choudhury being charged with sedition by the Cachar police, Assam. Joining its affiliate, Journalists Union of Assam, the IJU demanded that the charges under various sections, including sedition, be withdrawn immediately.

New Delhi, 25 November 2021: Observing the International Day for the elimination of violence against women today, the Indian Journalists Union urges the Modi government to ratify International Labour Organisation Convention 190 on Violence and harassment in the world of work at the earliest.

New Delhi, 16 November 2021: On the occasion of National Press Day, the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) appeals to the journalist community to unite to defend the freedom of press, media rights and freedom of speech and expression enshrined in our Constitution. The list of targeted killings of journalists, violence, threats, harassment, intimidation in the country is menacingly growing. Worse, arbitrary detention, false cases against journalists under draconian laws such as sedition, UAPA and even NSA, are tools being used by authorities to stifle independent and critical reporting. 

New Delhi, 15 November 2021: The Indian Journalists Union joins its affiliate the Tripura Journalists Union in expressing concern over detention and filing of cases against two Delhi-based women journalists of HW News Network, Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha for their reportage and tweet on the communal friction in the State. Though the two were released on bail by the CJM court in Gomti district today on furnishing a bond of Rs 75000 each, the IJU demands the cases, as well as against journalist Shyam Meera Singh (under UAPA), be withdrawn immediately, as these have a ‘chilling effect’ on journalists and stifle freedom of speech and expression.     

New Delhi, 2 November 2021: On International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, the Indian Journalists Union along with its affiliates denounces crimes targeting journalists that remain unpunished while the masterminds walk free and has demanded that both the Central and State governments put an end to the culture of impunity.

New Delhi, 16 October 2021: The Indian Journalists Union is gravely concerned on the recurring harassment of journalists in Kashmir and concerted efforts by the authorities to clampdown on independent media in the Valley. The detention and questioning of journalists continues unabated with this month alone seeing five journalists and media workers being victims of a government policy to clampdown on information flow. The authorities, demands the Union, must refrain from such bullying tactics and respect freedom of speech and expression.
