New Delhi, 30 October 2022: The Indian Journalists Union is shocked and strongly condemns the reported attempt by an official at Karnataka Chief Minister’s Office to bribe a dozen-odd journalists by giving “cash” gifts ranging between Rs 1 and 2.5 lakhs on Diwali. The cash was in envelopes along with sweet boxes in hampers sent to them. Hailing the response by at least two journalists, who returned the gifts, the IJU demands an inquiry by Lokayukta be instituted as well as the Press Council of India take suo moto notice and take appropriate action. 

New Delhi, 20 October 2022: The Indian Journalists Union has expressed serious concern over Kashmiri photojournalist with Reuters and Pulitzer Prize winner Sanna Irshad Mattoo being stopped at the Delhi’s IGI Airport on Tuesday from flying to the US to attend the award ceremony. The IJU said the arbitrary action is malafide and misuse of authority and worse it’s the second time she has been stopped from travelling

New Delhi, 27 August 2022: Watching ongoing developments, the Indian Journalists Union expresses serious concern over the hostile takeover bid of NDTV, one of the few independent media houses that dare defending truth in the country, by the Adani group. More so, as the broadcaster has challenged the indirect acquisition as claimed without ‘discussion, consent, or notice of NDTV founders.’

New Delhi, 26 August 2022:  The Indian Journalists Union condemns the alleged deportation of American journalist of India origin Angad Singh, with Vice News, back to New York within three hours of his flight landing at Delhi’s IGI Airport on August 24 night. According to a Facebook post by his mother Gurmeet Kaur “They didn’t give a reason. But we know it is his award winning journalism that scares them…” Angad, who covers South Asia for the Vice News was nominated for an Emmy award for his coverage of the devastating second Covid wave.  

New Delhi, 15 August 2022: On the occasion of the first anniversary of the Taliban takeover of Kabul, Afghanistan today, the Indian Journalists Union expresses solidarity with journalists and media workers which continue to face attacks, intimidation and arbitrary detainment. As part of the International Federation of Journalists global action to save at-risk Afghan media workers, the IJU urged the Government of India to streamline its visa application process and increase the humanitarian intake.

New Delhi/Imphal, 4 August 2022: The Indian Journalists Union condemns the summoning and harassment of the President of All Manipur Working Journalists Union, Wangkhemcha Shamjai by the National Investigation Agency over past two days. The IJU President Geetartha Pathak joined the protest held by AMWJU, Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) and Manipur Hill Journalists Union (MHIU) in Imphal demanding that the NIA desist from such arbitrary actions against journalists and respect the freedom of the press.

New Delhi, 20 July 2022: The Indian Journalists Union welcomes the Supreme Court order releasing AltNews co-founder and fact-checker Mohammed Zubair, on interim bail with regard to all FIRs filed by the Uttar Pradesh police. The Court also clubbed all the FIRs and said the case should be handled by one investigating authority i.e. the Special Cell of Delhi Police.

New Delhi, 16 July 2022: Making a note of the 10th India-EU Human Rights Dialogue held in Delhi reiterating commitment to protecting and promoting all human rights, the Indian Journalists Union hoped the commitments made are not on paper and that the Modi government would act upon these, particularly safeguarding the freedom and independence of journalists.

New Delhi, 3 July 2022: The Indian Journalists Union condemns the petty and vindictive action of both the Centre and J&K administration for stopping Kashmiri photojournalist and Pulitzer Prize awardee Sana Irshad Mattoo from flying to Paris to attend a book launch and photography exhibition. This, said the IJU, is yet another case of ongoing harassment of journalists and the Press Council of India must take suo moto cognisance.

New Delhi, 28 June 2022: The Indian Journalists Union condemns in the strongest of terms the arrest of Muhammad Zubair, co-founder of fact checking website AltNews. His arrest by the Delhi police smacks of malafide as it comes for his post in 2018, claimed by a Twitter handle to be ‘hurting religious sentiments.’ The Union called for his immediate release as the action is clearly intended not only to intimidate and harass Zubair but also hit out at AltNews, which is doing yeoman service in checking fake news and disinformation.

New Delhi, 1 June 2022: Indian Journalists Union Secretary General Sabina Inderjit was elected founder President of Federation of Asia Pacific Journalists (FAPaJ), a new regional organisation of the International Federation of Journalists, in Oman at its inaugural Congress held on 31st May. She was also re-elected as IFJ Vice President for the third consecutive term.
