Guwahati/New Delhi, 18 January 2023: The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) condemns an FIR filed against eight journalists from Nadia district of West Bengal reporting a case of alleged corruption in the office of Nabadwip Municipality office. The harassment of journalists for doing their duty is unacceptable said the union and demanded action against concerned officers.

New Delhi, 21 November 2022: The Indian Journalists Union has expressed serious concern over terrorist threats to journalists in Kashmir, leading to at least five journalists working local newspapers in Srinagar having resigned. The Union said that the journalists were working under grave conditions and demanded that the State authorities embark on confidence building measures, provide a safe environment and apprehend the culprits at the earliest.

New Delhi, 5 December 2022: The Indian Journalists Union welcomes bail granted to 25-year-old Kashmir-based photojournalist Mohammad Manan Dar, languishing in jail since 22 October 2021, accused of ‘plotting terrorist acts in Kashmir and major cities in India.’ The Union cautioned the NIA against deliberately targeting journalists under UAPA, specially in Kashmir, and to make note of the court order: Upon analysis of entire evidence and at least for purpose of disposal of bail application it can be observed that “accusation against the accused does not appear to be cogent and true.”

New Delhi, 24 December 2022: The Indian Journalists Union welcomes the bail granted to Kerala-based journalist Siddique Kappan, though much delayed, as he has been languishing in jail for over two years. The IJU said Kappan’s case highlights the extent to which a government, in this case that of Uttar Pradesh, goes to harass a journalist by misusing the laws and demanded that governments refrain from attacking the journalists’ rights and freedom of press.

New Delhi 25 November 2022: To mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women today, the Indian Journalists Union called upon the Modi government to ratify ILO Convention 190 on harassment and violence in the world of work. It also urged State affiliates to impress upon media houses to prioritise tacking online abuse of women journalists, which is growing menacingly.

New Delhi, 2 November 2022: On International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, the Indian Journalists Union has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure his government adopt the International Federation of Journalists Federation sponsored UN Convention on the safety and independence of journalists and other media professionals. This, said the IJU was important as to date there are no international binding instruments that compel UN member states to ensure security of journalists and to investigate crimes against them.

New Delhi, 2 November 2022: The Indian Journalists Union has expressed grave concern over Delhi Police Crime Branch raiding homes of The Wire’s founding Editors Siddharth Varadarajan, M.K. Venu, Sidharth Bhatia, Deputy Editor Jahnavi Sen and product-cum-business head Mithun Kidambi in Delhi and Mumbai, and seizing various devices. A clear intimidation tactic, said the IJU.

New Delhi, 30 October 2022: The Indian Journalists Union is shocked and strongly condemns the reported attempt by an official at Karnataka Chief Minister’s Office to bribe a dozen-odd journalists by giving “cash” gifts ranging between Rs 1 and 2.5 lakhs on Diwali. The cash was in envelopes along with sweet boxes in hampers sent to them. Hailing the response by at least two journalists, who returned the gifts, the IJU demands an inquiry by Lokayukta be instituted as well as the Press Council of India take suo moto notice and take appropriate action. 

New Delhi, 20 October 2022: The Indian Journalists Union has expressed serious concern over Kashmiri photojournalist with Reuters and Pulitzer Prize winner Sanna Irshad Mattoo being stopped at the Delhi’s IGI Airport on Tuesday from flying to the US to attend the award ceremony. The IJU said the arbitrary action is malafide and misuse of authority and worse it’s the second time she has been stopped from travelling

New Delhi, 27 August 2022: Watching ongoing developments, the Indian Journalists Union expresses serious concern over the hostile takeover bid of NDTV, one of the few independent media houses that dare defending truth in the country, by the Adani group. More so, as the broadcaster has challenged the indirect acquisition as claimed without ‘discussion, consent, or notice of NDTV founders.’

New Delhi, 26 August 2022:  The Indian Journalists Union condemns the alleged deportation of American journalist of India origin Angad Singh, with Vice News, back to New York within three hours of his flight landing at Delhi’s IGI Airport on August 24 night. According to a Facebook post by his mother Gurmeet Kaur “They didn’t give a reason. But we know it is his award winning journalism that scares them…” Angad, who covers South Asia for the Vice News was nominated for an Emmy award for his coverage of the devastating second Covid wave.
