The General Body of the Ladakh Journalists Union (LJU) met at Leh Press Club on 18 April, 2018 and elected its new office bearers. The Union was formed last year and affiliated to Indian Journalists Union (IJU), the largest and most representative organisation of the working journalists in the country.
The office bearers of the LJU are: President: Rinchen Angmo Chhumikchan (Reach Bulletin), General Secretary: Tsewang Rigzin (State Times), Vice-Presidents: Morup Stanzin (Times of Ladakh), Nissar Hussian (ETV Urdu Correspondent), Advisor: Tashi Morup (Senior Journalist) and Treasurer: Stanzin Desal.
LJU President Rinchen Angmo Chhumikchan said that after successfully running Press Club of Leh since 2014, journalists in Leh formed the Ladakh Journalists Union (LJU) last year to safeguard the interests of journalists operating in Ladakh. He said the aim of the union was to help, support and guide each other in the press fraternity so that journalists could boldly work on any story, that needs to be told, without any hesitation. He said the union gained further strength as several journalists joined it in the last one year.
The IJU’s National Executive Committee, which met at Bhubaneswar in February granted affiliation to the LJU. In a letter to the Union, IJU President S N Sinha, said, "We are confident that the Ladakh Journalists Union as an IJU affiliate will come up to the highest expectations of the IJU in serving the interests of the journalist community of Ladakh in particular and Jammu & Kashmir in general. We welcome you into our fold."
